The Role of Vaginal Lubricants When Trying to Get Pregnant

Trying to conceive can be very stressful for many couples. It can lead to increased vaginal dryness during intimacy. Clinical studies have shown that most female lubricants (even those labelled “non-spermicidal”) may damage sperm and interfere with the role of the cervical mucus. They should be avoided when you are ready to become pregnant.

Generally, the vagina's acidic secretions can kill sperm, but given that the cervical mucus produced just before ovulation is alkaline, it protects the sperm. Artificial lubricants prevent the sperm from reaching the cervical mucus quickly, so they die in the acidic environment of the vagina before making it inside the uterus. (One brand of lubricant on the market, called Pre-Seed that is said to be designed not to damage sperm.)

Pre-Seed is unique as it was developed by a female Sperm Physiologist. It’s plant based arabinogalactan provides antioxidant support and most doctors recommend it as it relieves vaginal dryness without harming sperm and has been shown to be less irritating than other vaginal lubricant gels. Pre-Seed comes in a tube with 9 applicators. It is designed for both external and internal lubricant application to best mimic natural secretions.

The American Society of Reproductive Medicine designates PreSeed as a lubricant of choice for couples trying to conceive in the Society's Optimizing Natural Fertility guidelines (Fertility & Sterility 2008; 90: S1-S6).

Be very careful when using lubricants as any artificial lubricant for women, whether store-bought or found at home (such as egg whites or mineral oil), presents a potential problem. If vaginal dryness is an issue, you should also spend time on foreplay, taking your time leading up to intercourse. Spend around 15 to 20 minutes of stimulation to get in the mood.

If you still have minimal mucus despite all attempts at foreplay, try using Pre-seed lubricating gel. It’s formula will not harm sperm and it may be just the thing to reduce the stress associated with trying to get pregnant. It may be difficult to locate Pre-seed in India but it is available in some on-line stores like www.home-check.net.in.
